Market Snapshot: Women’s Health 2020

Market Overview

Women make up just about half the world’s population. While 80% of household healthcare spending decision is made by women, throughout history, women’s health has taken a backseat to men’s health, especially women’s needs beyond reproduction. The trend is changing. In the last 5 years, the investment in technology solutions for women’s health has finally reached $100 million a year.

In addition to technology VC investment, we have seen heightened interest from major payers in partnering with groups of specialists(not just OB/GYNs) in developing new models of holistic delivery of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions that affect a woman’s physical and emotional well-being.  These health issues can largely be divided into two categories – reproductive health and non-reproductive health, as shown below:

Reproductive Health

  • Menopause
  • Pregnancy and childbirth (also known as obstetrics; e.g., infertility)
  • Sexual health (e.g., birth control, sexually transmitted infections, gynecology)

Non-Reproductive Health

  • Cancer (breast, ovarian, other)
  • Cardiovascular health (e.g., heart disease)
  • Bone health (osteoporosis)

Women’s health services involve processes used to diagnose and treat conditions.  Procedures used for diagnosis include the following:

  • Bone density testing
  • Breast/pelvic exams
  • Cancer screenings
  • Health risk assessments
  • Hormonal testing
  • Immunizations
  • Pap smears/HPV testing
  • STI screening

Procedures used to treat women’s health conditions include the following:

  • Cesarean section (C-section)
